ANI News Winter storm to hit east US; D.C. opens shelters and increases outreach to unsheltered residents

As a major winter storm approached the Eastern United States, D.C.’s Department of Human Services (DHS) intensified its efforts on Friday, January 23, to protect the city’s homeless population from dangerously cold conditions. DHS Director Rachel Pierre and outreach manager Ted Joseph spent the day visiting tent encampments and meeting unsheltered residents, distributing hand warmers, blankets, and toiletry kits while encouraging them to seek shelter before the storm hits. “We’ve been able to bring many people inside, but there are still some who haven’t said yes,” Pierre said, emphasizing the importance of safety. The city has activated roughly 1,700 shelter beds, with the capacity to expand if needed, and continues hypothermia-season operations including wellness checks and cold alerts. Joseph noted the challenges of building trust with individuals reluctant to leave the streets. With up to 12 inches of snow expected across D.C., Baltimore, New York, and Boston, Mayor Bowser declared a state of emergency and requested National Guard support, urging residents to access resources at COLD.DC.GOV.
