U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson called the recent government shutdown “utterly pointless and foolish,” . He went on to accuse Democrats of using Americans as “leverage” in a failed political tactic. Johnson welcomed the bipartisan resolution that ended the impasse and advanced appropriations bills to the President’s desk but lamented the damage caused. The House passed the funding package 222–209 earlier in the day, with Republican support holding together following an endorsement from President Donald Trump. The bill, which had already cleared the Senate, has been signed by President Trump formally ending the longest government shutdown in U.S. history.
