US President Trump spoke to PM Modi as tension on Strait of Hormuz heightened on March 24. US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor posted on X, sharing key issues discussed on the phone call. Trump-Modi discussed “ongoing situation in the Middle East, including Strait of Hormuz tension”. Amid rising tensions, Indian ships carrying LPG crossed Strait of Hormuz, hinting at New Delhi’s diplomatic reach. Notably, Trump gave Iran 48-hour ultimatum to open Strait of Hormuz, else ‘US will attack Iran’s power plants’. However, Trump later delayed the attack citing ‘good discussion with Iran over the two days’. Iran later denied any such discussion with Washington, fueling into the building tension between the two. Tehran repeatedly said, Strait of Hormuz is open for all ‘except the enemies’, especially Israel and the West. India, along with Russia, China and some others, have been assured by Iran to enjoy safe passage through the Strait. New Delhi’s strong and pragmatic bond with both sides put India in a position to play an important role in the conflict. India enjoys cultural ties with Iran, strategic partners in US-Israel and strong economic ties with Gulf countries like Saudi, UAE.
