ANI News “Commitment to justice…”: Iran thanks India for opposing UNHRC resolution calling for ‘scrutiny’

India at UN Human Rights Council voted against the UNHRC resolution that strongly deplored the crackdown on protests in Iran. The 47-member body adopted the resolution with 25 votes in favour, 7 against and 14 abstentions. The resolution called for an urgent investigation by Fact-Finding Mission, in the context of repression of nationwide protests started in Dec 2025. Iranian Ambassador to India Mohammad Fathali appreciated India for supporting Tehran at UNHRC. Taking to social media platform ‘X, Fathali extended ‘gratitude’ to the government of India. He further called India’s support as reflection of “commitment to justice, multilateralism, and national sovereignty”. Meanwhile, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk called for the top Iranian leadership to end their brutal repression. In response, Iranian envoy to UN Ali Bahreini hit back at UNHRC by saying “sponsors of this session had never genuinely cared for the human rights of Iranians”. The Islamic Republic witnessed the widespread anti-govt protests driven by soaring inflation, economic hardship and mounting public anger over governance. The government crackdown was widely condemned, with US President Donald Trump threatening to intervene in support of the protesters.
