US President Donald Trump on Friday criticized Canada for rejecting his proposed “Golden Dome” missile defense project over Greenland, warning that by favoring closer economic ties with China, Canada risks being “eaten up” by Beijing within a year. Posting on Truth Social, Trump argued that the system would protect Canada and accused Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney of being ungrateful for US security support, stating, “Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that, Mark.” The comments follow Carney’s address at the World Economic Forum, where he emphasized a shifting global order and opposed tariff coercion, implicitly referencing US interest in Greenland. On January 17, Carney announced a new trade deal with China, opening over $7 billion in export markets and agreeing to cut tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles in exchange for lower tariffs on Canadian farm products, including canola. Carney described China as a more predictable partner than the US, highlighting Canada’s goal of diversifying trade and strengthening its economy amid global uncertainty.
