Will parliamentary elections in Syria lead to democratic transition? | Inside Story
Syria has held its first parliamentary elections since the ousting of the Assad regime.
But the poll wasn’t open to the public. And some areas didn’t get to vote.
Instead, local committees selected members for two thirds of the seats in the newly created People’s Assembly.
The rest will be appointed by President Ahmed Al Sharaa.
But despite some criticism, Syria’s leader says these elections are necessary for the post-war transition and Syria’s new constitution.
So, after nearly 14 years of civil war, will this process lead to a democratic transition?
