PNG marks 50 years of independence as defence treaty with Australia faces delay
Papua New Guinea marked 50 years of independence with nationwide celebrations.
The anniversary coincided with planned bilateral talks with Australia on a defence treaty.
The pact would see both nations defend each other, share military facilities, and integrate forces.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said it would be Australia’s first new alliance in 70 years.
PNG’s Prime Minister James Marape reaffirmed Australia as his country’s security partner of choice.
But instead of signing, both sides issued a communiqué as cabinet reviews caused delays.
The setback highlights Australia’s struggle to counter China’s growing influence in the Pacific.
Al Jazeera’s Sarah Clarke reports from Brisbane, Australia.
