How much will a shutdown cost the US government?
The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has said the shutdown will cost the US government approximately $400m a day in furlough pay.
The office estimated that about 750,000 workers will be put on furlough, although the exact number could vary depending on how long the shutdown lasts. They will receive back pay once the shutdown ends.
Members of Congress, however, will keep getting paid throughout.
Besides furlough pay, the CBO said, there could be a long-term impact on the US economy from delays in payments, compensation, lapsed contracts, and an overall fall in demand in the private sector resulting from the shutdown.
The 2018-19 shutdown during Trump’s first term as president cost the US economy approximately $3bn, or about 0.02 percent of annual GDP.
Al Jazeera’s Heidi Zhou-Castro reports from Washington, DC.
Eric Ham, a Washington, DC-based political analyst, says the US constitution was designed by the founding fathers to “create debate, create negotiation” – the opposite of how the government shutdown is playing out.
