Gaza ceasefire at risk if Trump receives Nobel Peace Prize too soon, says expert
In an Al Jazeera interview, Sultan Barakat, professor of public policy at Hamad bin Khalifa University, said the Gaza ceasefire is still in its very early stages, with Israel continuing attacks on Gaza.
He highlighted the global focus on the deal, noting that the United States holds the key leverage over Israel, particularly Prime Minister Netanyahu, to enforce compliance.
Barakat stressed that Donald Trump’s personal reputation is driving international efforts, but warned that awarding him the Nobel Peace Prize now could undermine the ceasefire’s implementation.
He noted that Netanyahu is displeased with the deal, which many view as a political win for Hamas, and emphasised that negotiations mark a shift from trying to defeat Hamas to engaging with them directly. Barakat also underscored that actual peace depends on implementing the agreement on the ground, including the release of hostages and humanitarian aid.
He urged patience and careful diplomacy to ensure the ceasefire becomes a meaningful step toward stability.
