French prosecutors demand prison for Sarkozy in Libya funding case
Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy faces a potential seven-year prison sentence as prosecutors conclude a major corruption trial in Paris.
Sarkozy is accused of accepting millions of dollars in illegal campaign funds from former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi for his successful 2007 presidential bid.
The allegations suggest a secretive pact spanning years, with Sarkozy helping to rehabilitate Gaddafi’s global image in exchange for financial support.
While Sarkozy denies all charges, calling them baseless fabrications, the trial has sent shockwaves through French politics, demonstrating that even former heads of state are not above the law.
Al Jazeera’s Natacha Butler reports from Paris.
