Floods in Pakistan’s Punjab devastate farms and drive food prices higher
Heavy monsoon rains have triggered devastating floods in Pakistan’s Punjab province, submerging entire communities and decimating farmland.
In the agricultural heartland of the country, families have lost homes, livestock and livelihoods.
The floodwaters have turned roads into rivers, cutting off villages and leaving survivors clinging to strips of dry land. With livestock worth thousands of dollars perishing and crops destroyed, the impact is rippling through daily life far beyond the affected areas.
The disaster has led to severe food shortages, causing prices in local markets to nearly double.
Punjab, known as Pakistan’s breadbasket, typically feeds the nation and exports produce worth billions. Now, with vast swathes of farmland underwater, the floods threaten both food security and the broader economy. As villagers brace for more rain, the devastation highlights the increasing vulnerability of agricultural communities to extreme weather events.
