Cameroon faces rising poverty and frustration before elections
In Cameroon’s capital, traders and hawkers struggle as falling commodity prices and social inequality deepen economic hardship.
Many young graduates are unemployed or forced into informal work to survive. Farmers face mounting debt after a 40% crash in cocoa prices, while the cost of living continues to rise.
Despite forecasts of nearly 4% GDP growth, citizens say the benefits are not reaching them, with poverty now affecting 40% of the population.
Analysts have raised concerns over undisclosed Chinese loans and growing public debt. As elections approach, calls for change grow louder amid frustration over corruption and mismanagement.

Al Jazeera’s Ahmed Idris reports from Yaounde, Cameroon.
