Bobi Wine aide’s arrest sparks claims of torture and intimidation in Uganda
Swabrah Kiganda’s husband, known as Bobi Giant, was arrested in Uganda for allegedly holding an illegal assembly.
He is an aide to opposition presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, better known as Bobi Wine, who says the charges are political.
The opposition claims dozens of its members have been detained, with some tortured, including one activist whose abuse was bragged about online by the president’s son.
Government officials deny sanctioning torture, urging victims to file formal complaints.
Uganda heads to elections in January, but past polls were marred by violence, arrests and intimidation.
At a recent by-election, security forces were accused of attacking voters and journalists, though the government blamed the opposition.
Rights groups warn of unpunished killings and fear the coming vote may not be free or fair.

Al Jazeera’s Catherine Soi reports from Kampala, Uganda.
