At least 800 people killed, 25,500 injured in Afghanistan earthquake
At least 800 people have been killed and over 2,500 wounded after a powerful earthquake hit the eastern Kunar province of Afghanistan.
Due to its mountainous surroundings, Afghanistan is prone to tremors as it is located near the meeting point between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, which are a highly active seismic zone.

Thamindri de Silva, national director of World Vision Afghanistan, says while the exact scale of destruction is still hard to gauge due to the remoteness and inaccessibility of many affected areas, the Mazar Valley area seems to be the “epicentre”, with one village “completely destroyed”.
“This is one of the most remote and also one of the poorest parts of Afghanistan,” she told Al Jazeera from Kabul, noting it has minimal infrastructure, extremely limited road access, and no health facilities or schools.
