Peru general election 2026: Record 35 candidates as political crisis deepens

Peru faces a worsening security crisis as voters prepare to choose from 35 candidates in the 12 April presidential election.
The country has cycled through eight presidents in the past decade, most removed on corruption charges, leaving nearly 60 per cent of voters still undecided.
Contract killings and extortions have surged, with more than 2,200 homicides recorded last year. Candidates are taking part in televised debates to present plans on crime and corruption, but many Peruvians remain sceptical of political promises.

Al Jazeera’s Mariana Sanchez reports from Lima, Peru.
