Nigerian traders help ease Sahel food shortages amid border restrictions

Growing insecurity across the Sahel has tightened border controls and disrupted trade routes, leading to shortages of food and essential goods in conflict-affected countries.
Markets in northern Nigeria, particularly Kano’s Dawanau market, have become a vital lifeline, with an estimated 50 trucks leaving daily for Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso and Chad.
Traders and transporters face significant risks navigating insecure routes, but the informal supply chain continues to sustain millions in landlocked and fragile regions. If roads close completely, the human cost could be severe.

Al Jazeera’s Ahmed Idris reports from Kano, Nigeria.
