Migrants risk treacherous journeys from Morocco to Spain seeking a better future in Europe

Conflicts, poverty and climate change are just some of the issues behind an unprecedented, global, displacement crisis.
Each year millions of people risk their lives in hopes of a better future, making treacherous journeys.
Europe is among the destinations of a rising number of arrivals, often from Africa.
Thousands attempt to reach Europe mainly through the Central Mediterranean, Western Mediterranean and Western African routes.
The Western Mediterranean route connects North Africa to mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands.
As many countries move to curb migration, the Spanish government has approved plans to give half a million undocumented migrants legal status.

Al Jazeera’s Nicolas Haque reports from the town of Belyounech, Morocco.

Andrew Geddes is a professor of migration studies at the European University Institute and the director of the Migration Policy Center.
He said European immigration policy has led to the emergence of more dangerous routes.
