After Putin’s Offer To Extend New START Treaty, Now Russia Stuns West With This Major Demand
Russia has issued a new demand over nuclear arms control, calling for Britain and France’s nuclear arsenals to be monitored. The Kremlin’s move comes as Moscow signals limited readiness to extend the landmark U.S.-Russia arms pact, which restricts deployed nuclear warheads and delivery systems, for one year beyond its February 2026 expiration. President Putin announced the offer on September 22, while Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov reinforced it at the UN General Assembly, warning that ignoring other NATO nuclear powers undermines strategic stability. The 2010 treaty, signed by Barack Obama and Dmitry Medvedev, caps U.S. and Russian arsenals at 1,550 deployed warheads and 800 delivery systems, with provisions for monitoring stockpiles. Russia suspended participation in 2023, citing Western backing for Ukraine and attacks on its bomber bases, but did not withdraw.
