A powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck northern Afghanistan overnight, killing at least 20 people and injuring more than 300, according to the Health Ministry. The quake, centred near Mazar-i-Sharif at a depth of 28 kilometres, caused widespread damage, including to the city’s historic Blue Mosque. Casualties were reported mainly in Balkh and Samangan provinces as rescue teams raced to pull survivors from the rubble. Tremors were felt as far as Kabul. The disaster worsens Afghanistan’s humanitarian crisis, already strained by drought, hunger, and limited international aid under Taliban rule.
