US President Trump dines with Canadian PM Carney despite anger over anti-tariff Ad
Just before landing in South Korea, Trump posted on Truth Social: “We didn’t travel to South Korea to meet with Canada”. A few hours later, the U.S. president found himself sitting across from Canadian PM Mark Carney at a formal dinner. Trump has been angered ever since Ontario released an advertisement that used a Ronald Reagan speech to ridicule his trade tariffs. He went on to accuse both Canada and Carney of attempting to sway the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision regarding tariff policy. The conflict intensified when Trump, while en route to Asia, declared a new 10% tariff on Canadian imports. In spite of the growing strain, Carney maintained his invitation for Trump to attend the APEC dinner in Gyeongju, South Korea. The event, hosted by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, gathered leaders from six Asia-Pacific countries. Carney sought to downplay tensions, saying Canada was “ready when appropriate” for trade talks. He added the two nations had made “considerable progress” in steel, aluminum, and energy talks. So far, Trump has not clarified how the new tariffs will be implemented
