LIVE: US, China Reach Trade Deal Framework ahead of Trump-Xi Meeting
The United States and China have reached a preliminary framework for a trade agreement just days before a planned meeting between Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the deal, finalized on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Malaysia on Sunday, would avert the planned 100% tariffs on Chinese imports scheduled to take effect on November 1. It also includes terms for a “final agreement” regarding the sale of TikTok’s U.S. operations. Trump arrived in Malaysia on Sunday to attend the summit, the first stop on his five-day tour of Asia, which is expected to conclude with a face-to-face meeting with Xi in South Korea on Thursday.
