Who is Justice Surya Kant, the next probable Chief Justice of India?
CJI BR Gavai recommended Justice Surya Kant’s name as the next Chief Justice of India. Appointment of the Chief Justice of India is governed by Memorandum of Procedure (MOP). As per MOP, name of the senior-most judge of Supreme Court, considered fit to hold the office, is recommended. Upon formal appointment Justice Kant would become the 53rd CJI. BR Gavai is set to retire as CJI on November 23, 2025 as he turns 65. Justice Gavai will serve a tenure of nearly 15 months, until February 9, 2027.
