‘Trump has no magic wand’: ASEAN itself must carry regional peace efforts forward, says analyst
At this year’s Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Thailand and Cambodia signed a long-awaited peace agreement after months of border clashes. The deal was sealed in the presence of United States President Donald Trump – but can his involvement translate into lasting peace? Associate Professor Simon Tay, chairman of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs, tells CNA’s Asia Tonight that while America’s presence matters, ASEAN must continue its work in carrying the agreement forward. Assoc Prof Tay says the bloc’s strength lies in its patience and persistence, as it works to sustain peace and stability while navigating the power struggle between the US and China.
