Minister Of Finance Clarifies: Funds Available for Public Servants’ Payments
Minister of Finance, Davendranath Tancoo, has strongly rejected what he describes as a “misleading interpretation” of his comments on public sector wage negotiations.
His statement comes following a recent newspaper headline that suggested there were no funds allocated for public servants’ payments.
Via a media release, the Finance Ministry stated that “at no time did the Minister state that funds were unavailable for the settlement of wages to public officers” during the Standing Finance Committee meeting on Tuesday.
The Ministry pointed out that Government cannot include unconfirmed figures in the Budget for negotiations that have not yet started.
He assured that once settlements are reached, the Government has “well-established mechanisms” to provide additional funds through Parliament, as has been done by previous administrations.
