India Plans Tough AI Rules to Tackle Deepfakes and Misinformation | Spotlight | N18G
India plans to tighten its artificial intelligence regulations to curb deepfakes and online misinformation. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has proposed amendments to the IT Rules, 2021, requiring AI-generated content to carry visible or audible labels covering at least 10% of visuals or initial audio. The draft defines “synthetically generated information” and mandates social media platforms and AI firms like Meta, X, Google, and OpenAI to verify and label such content. The ministry warns deepfakes can be weaponised to manipulate elections and harm reputations. Public feedback on the proposal is open until November 6, 2025.
