Madagascar coup leader Michael Randrianirina sworn in as president
Col. Michael Randrianirina was sworn in as Madagascar’s new president on Friday, after the military seized power in the wake of youth-led protests, forcing out his predecessor.
“Today marks a historic turning point for our country. With a people in turmoil, driven by the desire for change and a deep love for their homeland, we joyfully open a new chapter in our national life,” said Randrianirina.
He praised the youth’s “hope for a brighter, more secure future for themselves and for future generations.”
Ex-leader Andry Rajoelina, whom lawmakers impeached after he fled abroad over the weekend, has condemned the takeover and refused to step down while in exile, despite widespread defections in the security forces and the High Constitutional Court ratifying the army takeover within hours of it happening.
