Israel set to reopen Gaza’s Rafah crossing under ceasefire, but uncertainty prevails
The Rafah border crossing is meant to reopen under the ceasefire, allowing Palestinians to leave or return. It is Gaza’s only connection to the outside world, not directly run by Israel.
A 2005 agreement let the Palestinian Authority and the EU supervise the crossing until Hamas took control in 2007.
Since then, Israel imposed a blockade, and Egypt mostly kept the crossing closed.
Israeli forces seized Rafah in May 2024, controlling it and the Philadelphi Corridor for the first time in 20 years.
The Trump ceasefire calls for partial withdrawal, but Israel still controls much of Rafah, limiting Palestinian involvement.
For Palestinians, Rafah represents not just travel or aid, but control over their freedom of movement.
