Israel’s decades-old macabre policy denies Palestinians the right to bury their dead
Palestinian rights groups report that Israel is withholding the bodies of at least 735 martyrs, including 67 children, from families — many buried unmarked in so-called “cemeteries of numbers”.
The Israeli Supreme Court has upheld a sweeping policy allowing bodies of Palestinians, even citizens, to be held without individual assessments, justified by the state’s interest in future prisoner-exchange negotiations.
Advocacy groups say many bodies are kept in refrigerated containers, identified only by number, depriving families of dignified burials.
Some bodies have been released, but often they are misidentified or returned nameless.
Critics argue that withholding bodies violates international humanitarian law and denies individuals their basic human dignity.
The policy, which dates back decades and relies on Israeli law and cabinet decisions, has been reinforced in recent years, particularly since the war began in October 2023.
Al Jazeera’s Nour Odeh reports.
