After over two years in captivity, the final 20 Israeli hostages held by Hamas have been freed as part of a historic ceasefire agreement. This marks the end of 738 days of uncertainty and anguish.

In exchange, Israel has released 250 Palestinian prisoners and over 1,700 detainees. The deal, mediated by the U.S., Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, also involves the return of 28 deceased hostages’ remains.

These individuals were among 251 abducted during the Hamas-led October 7, 2023 attacks that killed about 1,200 people in southern Israel. The return prompted mass celebrations across Israel, notably in Tel Aviv’s “hostages square”.
