Madagascar is facing its biggest political crisis in years, with nationwide protests demanding President Andry Rajoelina’s resignation. What began as anger over water and power shortages has escalated into a mass uprising led by a youth movement. At least 22 people have been killed, according to the UN, as demonstrations spread and parts of the military join protesters. An elite unit, CAPSAT, has refused orders and appointed a new army chief. Rajoelina says there is an attempt to seize power illegally, sacking his cabinet and imposing curfews as the country faces growing instability. The Madagascar president has fled the African nation, the head of the opposition, a military source and a foreign diplomat said on Monday.
