Ecuador Protests Escalate: Demonstrations Turn Violent as Ecuador’s National Strike Continues
Clashes escalated on Sunday (October 12) in Quito during a march marking the Day of Resistance, as Ecuador reached 21 days of a national strike against the government of President Daniel Noboa.
Tensions rose when marchers tried to reach El Arbolito Park. Officers blocked their way with tear gas, prompting protesters to change their route.
The march marked the Day of Resistance, which Indigenous communities use instead of the Day of the Race and which the government officially designates as the Day of Interculturality and Plurinationality.
Social and Indigenous groups, including the National Indigenous Federation CONAIE, called the march on the 21st day of the national strike.
Protests erupted in Ecuador in mid-September after Noboa ended diesel subsidies, and have continued to spread, leading him to declare a 60-day state of emergency in 10 of the country’s 24 provinces on October 5, 2025.
One person has died, and several have been injured during the national strike.
