‘Israel wants to seek peace with its neighbours’, says president Herzog in Hostage Square address
Israeli President Isaac Herzog said his country “wants to seek peace with its neighbours” during an address from Hostage Square in Tel Aviv on Sunday (October 12).
He addressed the families of the hostages and thanked U.S President Donald Trump ahead of his expected visit on Monday (October 13), when hostages held by Hamas for over two years are also expected to be released under a U.S.-brokered deal to end Gaza war.
“Now we are looking forward anxiously to see our hostages back home tomorrow,” said Herzog.
During his address, Herzog acknowledged the efforts of Trump and thank him for working on bringing the hostages back and changing “the reality in the Middle East towards a better direction.”
The United States, along with Egypt, Qatar and Turkey, mediated what has been described as a first phase agreement between Israel and Hamas for a ceasefire and the release of hostages by Hamas and prisoners and detainees by Israel.
After a few hours visit to Israel and an address to the Knesset, Trump is expected to head to Egypt, where he will attend an international summit to determine details of his Gaza plan.
Under the ceasefire agreement, Hamas is due by noon on Monday to release the remaining hostages, taken captive on October 7, 2023, when the group’s militants launched the surprise attack on Israel that ignited the war.
Hostages coordinator Gal Hirsch on Thursday said a task force would be formed to help find the remains of any dead hostages that Hamas could not locate. Twenty of the 48 hostages are known to be alive.
Israel is also to release 1,700 Palestinians who have been detained in Gaza since October 7, 2023 and 22 Palestinian minors, along with the bodies of 360 militants.
