US President Donald Trump has announced that Israel and Hamas have agreed on the first phase of a peace framework that aims at a Gaza ceasefire, and the release of Israeli captives and Palestinian prisoners.
Mitchell Barak, a former aide to Israel’s prime minister, defended Israel’s actions in Gaza in an interview with Al Jazeera, asserting that Israel had sent “nearly two billion kilos” of humanitarian aid during the war. He used this claim to counter allegations of a deliberate blockade and starvation tactics. However, UN agencies, including the World Food Programme (WFP) and UNICEF, have repeatedly warned of famine-like conditions in Gaza, especially in the north, blaming Israel’s restrictions on aid entry and movement rather than a lack of supplies on Israel’s part.
Barak refused to acknowledge UN-backed findings that famine has taken hold, arguing instead that the crisis was caused by Gaza’s leadership. He also denied Israel’s ongoing occupation of Gaza, claiming Israel “withdrew in 2005.” But international law experts and the UN maintain that Israel remains the occupying power, since it controls Gaza’s borders, airspace, and maritime access.
He further claimed the destruction of Gaza was the result of Hamas’s military tactics, alleging that Hamas “could have protected civilians or ended the war by releasing captives.” Yet, satellite imagery, UN reports, and independent rights groups have documented extensive damage to civilian infrastructure, including hospitals and schools, often with no clear military justification.
Barak reiterated that Israel’s objectives are to dismantle Hamas and free hostages, asserting that the latest ceasefire deal depends on both sides honouring their commitments.
