How giant pumpkins grow so grand
This season, the goal for some growers are to raise ghoulishly grand pumpkins. One grower, Tony Scott, grew a giant pumpkin this year that weighed in at 1,931 pounds.
Atlantic Giant pumpkins can gain 40 to 50 pounds a day, with the help of fertilizer and hundreds of gallons of water. Scott has perfected the art of growing these gargantuan pumpkins, including covering it with a tarp during the day to maintain stable temperatures and protect its skin from sunlight that could trigger ripening and reduce growth.
The key to growing these prized pumpkins is cutting off other nearby pumpkins so the vine sends all of its nutrients to a single fruit.
The giant pumpkins are often then donated to be carved or decorated.
