In view of the deaths of newborns and children due to cough syrup in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, the state governments have now swung into action.The Assistant Commissioner of Uttar Pradesh has ordered drug inspectors in all districts to sample cough syrups from pharmaceutical companies and medical stores and to seize any identified potentially lethal cough syrups. The Health Department has directed all medical stores and hospitals to collect samples of cough syrups and send them immediately to a Lucknow lab for testing. Along with this, samples of the cough syrup, as well as the Propylene Glycol used in the syrup, should also be sent to the Lucknow lab for testing from manufacturing units. Following Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, Coldrif cough syrup has now been banned in Maharashtra. The Gujarat and Uttarakhand governments have also ordered investigations. So far, 16 children have died due to this syrup in Madhya Pradesh, while three children have died in Rajasthan.
