Universal Ostrich Farm urges politicians to step up as fate of flock rests with Supreme Court
B.C.’s Universal Ostrich Farm is awaiting a Supreme Court decision on the fate of roughly 400 ostriches, as the daughter of one of the farm’s co-owners speaks out against the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

At a press conference Thursday with U.S. billionaire philanthropist and animal rights advocate John Catsimatidis, Katie Pasitney said Canadian leaders need to step up and support the farm’s ostriches.

The CFIA had planned to euthanize the flock after some tested positive for avian flu last December, but the move was halted by the Supreme Court last week. The agency has faced increasing pushback from the farm and its supporters since then, but there has been little political input.

Catsimatidis noted that if Canada doesn’t want the ostriches, it should allow U.S. government official Dr. Mehmet Oz to take them to his Florida ranch – a solution that has been floated before.
