Ecuador indigenous leader killed amid violent fuel protests, army blamed
In Ecuador, indigenous leader Efrain Fueres was shot dead, with human rights groups confirming soldiers fired the fatal shots. His death occurred during protests against the government’s decision to cut vital fuel subsidies, causing prices to soar. Protesters have blockaded major highways and clashed with security forces. The government claims protesters have kidnapped 17 soldiers, a charge indigenous leaders strongly deny, calling it a pretext for violent repression. President Daniel Noboa has declared a 60-day state of emergency. Indigenous groups vow to continue their fight, especially against planned constitutional changes they say will eliminate their rights.
Al Jazeera’s Mariana Sanchez reports.
