Russia Makes Battlefield Gain As Trump Keeps Zelensky Busy, Biggest Attack Delivers Kirovsk To Putin
On September 24, Russia’s Ministry of Defense claimed the capture of the heavily fortified town of Kirovsk (Zarechnoye) in the Donetsk People’s Republic, following a surprise assault on entrenched Ukrainian forces. According to Russian officials, Ukrainian defenders had converted every house and basement into strongpoints, deploying up to 19 battalions, and leveraging difficult terrain along the Zherebets River. Despite these defenses, Russian troops credited their success to the element of surprise and are now reportedly clearing out remaining Ukrainian positions. The fall of Kirovsk is significant as it opens a path toward Krasny Liman, a major logistical hub in Donetsk, located about 8 km west. Krasny Liman, initially seized by Russia at the war’s outset, was retaken by Ukraine in late 2022.
