President al-Sharaa is first Syrian leader to visit UNGA in six decades
Syria’s Ahmed al-Sharaa, who came to power late last year after the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad and is due to become the first Syrian leader to attend the UNGA since the late 1960s.
The stakes are high for al-Sharaa, who is trying to rebuild his country after decades of war and sanctions, while Israel expands its occupation in some of Syria’s territory.
