Gunfire, Explosions, Ruckus… Ecuador prison riot leaves 14 dead, 14 wounded
A prison riot caused by gang fighting in southern Ecuador on Monday (September 22) left 14 people dead and another 14 wounded, according to a local police chief.
Prisoners in the port city of Machala, south of Guayaquil, clashed with authorities, killing a guard and kidnapping officers, police chief William Calle told TV network Ecuavisa.
Some prisoners escaped, and 13 have been recaptured so far, the Ecuadorean police said in a statement, adding that “uniformed officers confronted heavily armed inmates who tried to escape and maintain control of the cellblock.”
Authorities said the violence began after a violent confrontation between members of the gangs Los Lobos and Sao Box, which the police referred to as criminal organizations.
Ecuador has been plagued by prison riots in recent years, with hundreds of inmates killed. The government of President Daniel Noboa, who has vowed to crack down on crime, attributes the clashes to gangs vying for territory and control.
