Trump’s H-1B Fee Spike Sparks Warnings From Amazon, Meta & Microsoft, Tech Firms Send Urgent Text
U.S. tech giants including Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and JPMorgan issued emergency advisories on September 19–20 to employees holding H-1B and H-4 visas after President Donald Trump signed an order imposing a $100,000 annual fee per visa, effective September 21. Amazon urged foreign workers to remain in the U.S. and return before the deadline, while Microsoft and Meta gave similar guidance. JPMorgan went further, advising employees to avoid all international travel until further notice. The H-1B program, which allows U.S. companies to hire foreign professionals in specialized fields, has long been dominated by Indian workers, who made up 71% of approvals in 2024, with China a distant second at 11.7%. Trump’s directive marks an unprecedented escalation in visa costs, with immigration experts warning of severe disruption to America’s tech and innovation ecosystem.
