Philippines: After weeks of relentless monsoon rains, the Southeast Asian country is now witnessing public anger against over 100 flood control projects. On social media, young Filipinos are targeting the so-called “nepo babies,” heirs flaunting luxury lifestyle while millions wade through waist-deep water. The outrage has revived rapper Gloc-9’s anthem “Upuan”, as a soundtrack to inequality, with users branding rags-to-riches tales as “robs to riches.” At the center of the storm are Pacifico and Sarah Discaya, accused of profiting from billions in flood-control contracts. Government officials now admit over a hundred projects never existed, including a much-publicised dam north of Manila. Greenpeace estimates losses of $17.6 billion since 2023. With a House Speaker forced out and a “Trillion Peso March” planned on September 21, President Marcos Jr has promised to “unmask the swindlers.”
