China Accuses Philippines of “Invasion” Of Waters | South China Sea Dispute | Spotlight | N18G
Tensions are once again escalating in the South China Sea following a recent clash between Chinese and Philippine vessels near the disputed Scarborough Shoal. Chinese coast guard ships reportedly used water cannons against Philippine vessels, with Beijing accusing the Philippine ships of illegally entering its waters and even ramming a Chinese Coast Guard vessel. Manila has dismissed these claims, calling them Chinese disinformation. This latest incident comes after China announced a plan to build a “national reserve” at the shoal, a move condemned by the Philippines and its allies, including the United States. Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has been working with Washington and other allies, like Japan, to push back against China’s expansive maritime claims in the region.
