China’s military has strongly condemned the sailing of the US destroyer USS Higgins and British frigate HMS Richmond through the Taiwan Strait, calling it “trouble-making and provocation.” Beijing said its forces monitored and warned the warships, accusing Washington and London of undermining regional stability. Both the US and Britain maintained that the transit was routine, legal, and in line with international law. The US Indo-Pacific Command described the mission as a routine transit. “The ships transited through a corridor in the strait that is beyond the territorial sea of any coastal state,” it said in a statement.
