Kenya: President William Ruto’s government has pressed terror charges against over 70 Gen-Z protesters, who were arrested during nationwide anti-government demonstrations on June 25 and July 7 this year. The prosecution has requested 21 additional days to finalise its investigation, alleging links to terror networks. This move has been widely condemned by defence lawyers and human rights groups, who accuse the government of using anti-terror laws to stifle dissent. Former Chief Justice David Maraga, now a rival to Ruto for the 2027 presidential elections, has criticised the charges as a means to detain the accused and has stated that it is the state itself that is “terrorising the young people.”
