Poland ‘closest to open conflict since WWII’ after Russian drone attack
Poland shot down drones that entered its airspace during a widespread Russian attack in western Ukraine on Wednesday. The NATO member called the incursion “an act of aggression” and marked the first time a member of the alliance fired shots in the war.

A huge number of Russian drones violated Poland’s airspace, and those that posed a direct threat were shot down, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said. A NATO spokesperson said NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte was in touch with Polish leadership and the alliance was consulting closely with Poland.

“…Whether it was intentional or not, it is absolutely reckless. It is absolutely dangerous. But as I said, the full assessment is ongoing. And to Putin, I mean, my message is clear. Stop the war in Ukraine…” Rutte said.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk called the incident a “large-scale provocation” and activated Article Four of NATO’s treaty, under which alliance members can demand consultations with their allies.
