UK deputy PM resigns after admitting to underpaying property tax on 2nd home
Angela Rayner has officially resigned from her post as deputy prime minister and housing secretary in Britain’s federal government. This comes just two days after the Labour party member publicly admitting she underpaid the property tax on the purchase of a new, second home in Hove, England.
After fierce scrutiny from both the official opposition and British public, Rayner referred herself to the nation’s ethics watchdog ruling she had breached the ministerial code by incorrectly covering her “stamp duty.”
In a resignation letter handed to her boss, Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Friday, Rayner wrote, “I deeply regret my decision to not seek additional specialist tax advice… I take full responsibility for this error.” Starmer has fiercely defended Rayner since accusations of her being a “tax evader” began.
The news has garnered mixed reaction from the general public, with many happy to see her go, others commending her for owning up to her mistake, and some expressing empathy regarding Rayner’s claims she was given “inaccurate” financial advice due to a trust set up by the court to handle the finances of her disabled son.
In wake of Rayner’s exit, Starmer’s cabinet is seeing a significant shuffle, with Foreign Minister David Lammy being appointed as the new deputy prime minister.
