DF-5C to JL-1: China’s ‘nuclear triad’ on display in Victory Day military parade in Beijing
China’s full military might on display as Beijing celebrated 80th anniversary of the end of WW2 on September 03. World watched carefully as China unveiled its ‘secret weapons’ for the first time in Victory Day parade. For the first time, China demonstrated its ‘nuclear triad’ – capability to launch nuclear weapons from land, air & water. Dongfeng-5C (DF-5C) is liquid-fueled ICBM with range exceeding 20,000 km, reaching any global target, reported Global Times. Hypersonic speeds reaching tens of Mach and MIRVs, each with decoy warheads, make the DF-5C a formidable adversary. Land based missiles, Dongfeng-61 (DF-61) and Dongfeng-31 also add up to China’s strategic “ace” power against enemies. Long-range missile JingLei-1 & drones provides People’s Liberation Army ability to launch nuclear weapon from air. Cruise missiles like Changjian-20A, Yingji-18C, Changjian-1000 equip China with all-weather combat capabilities, says Reuters. Submarine-launched intercontinental missile JuLang-3 elevated China’s capability to launch nukes from surface of water. Parade featured hypersonic anti-ship missiles of YingJi series, tested against mockups of US aircraft carriers: Reuters. One of the attractions of the majestic display were the drones that can operate underwater and in the air. China has been developing laser weapons as a defence against drone attacks, displayed on the victory day parade. Full range of anti-drone systems on display included missile gun, high-energy laser weapons, high-power microwave weapons. State media said that it represented a ‘triad’ in the People’s Liberation Army’s anti-drone systems.
