From Exile to Homecoming: 300 tribals return to Gujarat village after 12 years
Just during an offhand conversation, Alka — who worked as a domestic help at IPS Suman Nala’s home — casually revealed she had never seen her husband’s ancestral village. For 11 years, the Kodarvi tribals had been forced to flee Mota Pipodara in Gujarat’s Banaskantha after a murder triggered an enmity with the Dabhi community under the custom of Chadotaru. That remark set ASP Suman Nala on a mission. Soon after, police initiated the case, mediated peace, and paved the way for 29 families — nearly 300 people — to finally return home.
More than 300 tribals walked back into their ancestral land after 12 years — welcomed by Gujarat’s Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi and senior police officials. Their 8.5 hectares of land was identified, cleared and returned to them with the help of the revenue staff.
The Kodarvi tribals now consider ASP Suman Nala and SHO Jayshree Desai as part of their family for helping them find dignity in the village, where they belonged. Two houses with electricity, water and gas connections have already been built with NGO help, while more homes are under construction.
From a cook’s personal story to a community’s homecoming… the return of the Kodarvi tribals to Mota Pipodara is not just about rehabilitation, but about rewriting tradition with reconciliation.
