Ukraine’s latest strike on Russia’s energy facility to halt oil supply to Hungary, Slovakia?
Another major blow to Russia’s energy facilities after Ukraine’s strike on Thursday (August 21). Russian oil supplies to Hungary, Slovakia could be suspended for 5 days following the strike, said the two governments. European Union reduced energy supplies from Russia after its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Notably, Slovakia and Hungary opposed the phase-out, saying their economies depend on the Russian supplies. Two countries also opposed sanctions against Russia, which Ukraine advocated for, to push Moscow towards ceasefire. The two countries wrote to EU urging it to guarantee security of supplies amid Ukraine’s latest attack on Russia. The Soviet-era Druzhba pipeline, which supplies oil to Germany, Hungary & Slovakia, got affected by the latest strikes. Germany, however, said its supplies of Kazakh oil were unaffected by the latest strike amid the war. Russia and Ukraine stepped up attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure over the past few weeks. Ukraine’s strike on Thursday marked second time this week that Russian oil supplies been cut to Hungary, Slovakia. The two nations at war refused to hang on to military strikes on each other despite parallel negotiations for peace. Notably, Trump-Putin’s highly anticipated meeting at Alaska failed to reach an agreement to ceasefire. The two leaders are expected to meet again in Moscow for the second round of talks in the matter. However, direct talks between Russia’s Putin and Ukraine’s Zelenskyy is still not agreed upon.
